I am a 37 year old vegetarian, sometimes vegan, raw foodie. I love food, I love to cook, I love to prepare yummy foods. I believe you are what you eat.

I have been vegetarian since around 1999.  When my daughter was born 6 years later we found out she was allergic to the cow dairy I was ingesting and I had to cut it totally out of my diet.  During the 2 (+ a few months) years I breastfed her I was vegan.    Giving up cheese was one of the hardest things I think I ever had to do.  That sounds silly now but at the time it turned my world upside down.

Being a new mom, and an older mom, I’m always in need of more energy to keep me going and to keep up with my little one.  My journey to raw food started from that desire.

Now my little one is in school and I’m back to work full-time. Not only am I back to work full-time but I am also now a member of a performing dance troupe and trying to start my own business.  I am lucky if I have time to tie my shoes much less prepare a healthy dinner for everyone!  Don’t even get me started on the school lunches! My eating habits haven’t been the only ones to suffer. My little one is refusing to eat vegetables, my significant other is eating fast food… we are a mess! I am determined to bring us all back to healthy eating kicking and screaming.

In my spare time I am a mom, partner, belly dancer, fledgling writer, artist, paralegal and leap tall building in a single bound. I feel blessed to have the advice and support of all of my wonderful friends and family.

Why doesn’t your partner and child eat vegetarian? Food is a personal choice. My daughter likes her veggies raw but she also likes white pasta, meat and soy cheese. I provide them with a variety of healthy choices and don’t force my choices on them.
Why are you not a vegan raw foodie? I like to eat raw goat cheese and honey.  I do go on vegan spurts for weeks at a time but usually I’m a vegetarian.

What is high raw and why aren’t you high raw? High raw means to me eating raw about 90% of the time. It means eating condiments that aren’t raw and not stressing over being perfectly 100% raw. I have been high raw and I respect those that keep it up. Personally being high raw made me very sensitive to any cooked or processed foods so I opted to not stay at that level.

    Dear Avocado,
    As per your trying to ease off coffee into green tea;
Its difficult at best! Allow me to suggest “white tea”.
(called Peony or Bai Mu Dan in Chinese)
You can buy pre-packaged tea bags or the preferred
whole leaf form by the ounce at a tea shop or Wegman’s.
(it is light-weight, so I consider it economical)

This is an unfermented and lower caffeine version of the same
plant that both green and black teas originate from.
I drink it with agave. The leaves can be steeped 2 or 3 or even 4 more times for a less caffeinated drink.

Of course, the black versions of tea are much more heavily caffeinated and a natural for coffee drinkers. . .
    Good Luck,
    TJ Hoffman.
